SALLY’S RESCUE

Crash, Roar! Went the waves and the sky, lighting lashed out at the waves, taunting the ocean to do something. I felt the ocean brewing up a wave I had to get to my parents, when the ocean threw the wave at me laughing at my helplessness. I got tossed around by the waves unable to do anything. I was about to land in the water when a net captured me, I wriggled around trying to get out but I got more tangled in the net that I fell into the deep abyss of the ocean.

Ouch, I woke up with a start a crab was pinching my cheek “ow” I grunted again shaking off the crab. Then reality hit me I got lost in a storm my parents, I can’t find them. As I was thrashing around two human kids came running towards the beach. Humans are dangerous said my mother remember what happened to your Grandpa… she warned in a dream, too late the kids were upon me chatting away reminding me of the seagulls. Then the boy ran off towards a cabin and returned with bigger humans, all the while gesturing at me. The man knelt down and and took off the net and nudged me towards the water! But I didn’t move I need to find my parents. So hours later they came back with a box with a sardine which I gobbled up. They loaded me into the box and carried me into the boat, we were in the bay the wind roared and the ocean sprayed me with it’s salt water. Then I saw my parents time slowed, and I leaped off the boat and into their flippers!

Later that day I was leading my parents to the cabin while explaining my adventure, I saw the family who helped me, they were waving. So we jumped saluted and disappeared into the foamy water.

WACKY SHOES

I really need a vacation, I want to go to New Hampshire, Vermont, and Las Vegas! but I didn’t know soon I was going on vacation in the most unexpected way.

I was going to the town to buy some maple syrup and sugar for doughnuts at Auntie Lem’s. As I got there and was purchasing my items I saw a pair of cute floppy old dog slippers I added that and paid for it. ” Have a nice day,” said Auntie Lem cheerfully.

” Thanks ” I replied, I went to the park to try them on, the moment I tried them on they sprang to life! It started running to the lake but as soon as the wacky shoes saw it they went the other way! As I was running, a middle aged lady said, ” I had a pair of wacky shoes they were blue and red checkered…” but I was too far away to hear. With this pair of wacky shoes took me to New Hampshire, Vermont, and Las Vegas! When they came back I was super scared and tired.

They took me up to a lake and tried to get down when they saw the lake. I knew what I had to do an impossible idea, so I jumped and the shoes went still I swam to shore and  I kicked the pair of wacky shoes off, and wathched them sink to the bottom. Great I thought now I can get home.

I went home tired and soaked to make a scrap book of my vacation.

Years Later, a young girl went swimming and found a pair of old soaked floppy dog slippers…

SLOWER THAN THE REST

An anonymous person once said, “It is not what you are that holds you back. It is what you think you are not.” In the book,  Slower Than the Rest by Cynthia Rylant, is about a boy who struggles with self confidence and doubt. This boy is Leo, Leo thinks he is slow, and that he can never be happy, until he met Charlie. Some people may think Slower Than the Rest by Cynthia Rylant is about a boy who is slow, but it’s actually about not doubting yourself.

To begin with, Slower Than the Rest is about not doubting yourself. In the beginning Leo always thinks that he is slow, and that he is unworthy. For example on page 2 paragraph 2, the text says, “ He hadn’t many friends because he was slower than the rest.” Leo keeps doubting himself because he isn’t very confident. Another example was on page 2, the text says ,“ That was the his father said it: slower than the rest.” I think, that one of the reasons Leo is always doubting himself is the fact that his  father isn’t very supportive. As you can see Leo is always doubting himself.

Next, Slower Than the Rest is about not doubting yourself. Leo doesn’t think he is good enough, so Leo isn’t happy anymore. For example on page 2 paragraph 3, the text says, “  Leo was slow in reading, slow in numbers, slow in nearly everything that passed between him in the classroom.” Another example was on page 5, the text says, “ Mostly he talked about Charlie.” This makes me think, that Leo is proud of Charlie, and Charlie gives him strength. This shows that Leo is getting more confident.

Finally, Slower Than the Rest is about not doubting yourself. Leo started out not confident but now Leo is more confident. For example on page 2, the text says, “and placed in a room with other children who were as slow as he was Leo thought he would never get over it. He saw no way to be happy after that.” At first Leo was an unhappy kid, but then he met Charlie, who changed Leo’s life. I also noticed on page7, the text says, “That night, alone in his room, holding Charlie on his shoulder, Leo felt proud. And for the first time Leo felt fast.” Leo changes because he realizes  you don’t have to stick to one thing, and now Leo is confident in himself!

To sum up, Slower Than the Rest by Cynthia Rylant is about a unconfident boy who changes, because of his turtle Charlie. I learned that it’s okay if you’re slow but try not to doubt yourself. I hope you have confidence in yourself.

FOX

An anonymous person once said, “True friends are like diamonds, precious and rare. False friends are like leaves found everywhere.” In the book, Fox by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks, is a story about friendship, betrayal, and loyalty. In this case, Magpie has a great relationship with Dog but when Fox comes along, Magpie struggles with what she truly wants. Some people may think Fox by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks is about a Magpie getting tricked by a Fox but it’s really about being loyal to your true friend.

To begin with, the story Fox is about being loyal to your true friends. Near the beginning, Dog who is very caring and thoughtful, finds Magpie and tries to tend to her burnt wing. But Magpie was very reluctant and sad because she couldn’t fly anymore. So now Dog takes Magpie on his back and they gallop together every day, this is a beginning of an unlikely friendship. This is how Dog stays a true friend to Magpie, by always being with her. For example on page 7 paragraph 1, the text says , “And so Dog runs, with Magpie on his back, every day, through summer, through winter.” This shows that Dog stayed loyal to Magpie as her true friend.

Next, Fox is about being loyal to your true friend. In the middle of the story, page 2 paragraph 3 the text says, “I am his missing eye and he is my wings.” This is when Magpie was telling Fox that she would never leave Dog’s side when Fox was tempting her to leave Dog. Secondly Fox tries asking Magpie to come with him because he is better than Dog. For example page 2 paragraph 2 the text says ,“That night when Dog was asleep, Fox whispers to Magpie, “‘I can run faster than Dog.’ Faster than the wind. Leave Dog and come with me.” This makes me think that Magpie was being loyal to Dog by refusing to leave Dog.

Finally, in the story Fox, it’s about being loyal to your true friend. Near the end, when Fox persuades Magpie to come with him and Magpie finally agrees. For example on page 2 paragraph 7 the text says, “And when at dawn Fox whispers to the third time, she whispers back, “I am ready.”  This makes me think that Magpie was longing to fly again and the only way to do that was to go with Fox. So Magpie hopped on Fox’s back and Magpie rejoiced because she felt like she was flying again but I wonder was Magpie happy? And so Magpie and Fox rode on and came to a stop at the desert and then Fox abandons her! That’s when Magpie realizes what she’s done, but when Magpie thinks of Dog she start’s the long journey home. For example, page 2 paragraph 13 the text says, “But then she thought of Dog waking to find her gone.” Magpie finds courage and strength in Dog her one and only true friend.

To sum up, Fox by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks is about a jealous Fox, a loyal Dog, and a tempted Magpie, who all want one thing, friendship. This story has allowed me to appreciate my true friends and to never let them go. I hope you will find your true friend or if you have one, never let them go.

TACO HEAD

In the story  Taco Head by Viola Canales, is about a girl who wants to fit in, she is embarrassed because she knew people in her school called Mexican Americans names . Some people may think Taco Head by Viola Canales is about a girl who is ashamed of her culture, but it’s really about be who you want to be and don’t be embarrassed about things you enjoy.

To begin with, the story Taco Head is about not  being embarrassed about things you enjoy. In the beginning Sophia was self conscious about her tacos and it wasn’t that she didn’t like them it was because she was embarrassed about what people thought of them. For example on page 1 paragraph 1, the text says, “‘ Mama, can I please have some lunch money too, or a sandwich instead?” Sophie is clearly  wants to fit in. Another example was on page 1 paragraph 2, the text says, “ It was that some kids called all Mexican Americans beaners, so the last thing I needed was to stand out like a big stupid sign.” As you can see Sophia is embarrassed of the things she enjoys.

Next, Taco Head is about not being embarrassed about things you enjoy. Sophia can’t really stand up for herself. For example on page 1 paragraph 6, the text says, “‘ I wa stunned stupid. She grabbed the bag. ‘ Taco head! Taco head!’ she yelled.”’  This makes me think that Sophie Is scared and wasn’t  able to defend herself. Another example was on page 2 paragraph 2, the text says, “‘ Here Sophia,” she said as she pulled out the chair beside her. ‘ Everyone else was begging me to sit with me , but I said no, that I was saving this chair for you.’ I sat down feeling sick, and nervous . ‘ How about we trade.’” Coach Clarke is teaching Sophia to be proud of her culture. This shows that Sophia is getting more confident about the things she enjoys.

Finally, Taco Head is about being proud of who you are. Sophia is getting less embarrassed about her culture. For example on page 3 paragraph 2, the text says, “‘ She also told me ‘ Part of kicking that girl is to eat your tacos proudly, and right in the middle of the cafeteria.’” Sophia now is getting more confident about her food and doesn’t care what other people think of her. Another example was on page 3 paragraph 3, the text says, “ It wasn’t long after my lunches with Coach Clarke that some other Mexican Americans kids started eating their food out in the open too. And sometimes when I pulled out my lunch, I got offers to trade for sandwiches. But I always ate both my tacos before heading off to the library.” This proves that now Sophia doesn’t care what other people think of her, now she always does what she enjoys.

To sum up, Taco head by Va Canales iola Canales is about a girl who at first was embarrassed about her culture, but got more confident. I learned to be myself and not care about what people think of me, I hope you have learned something from this book too.

FOX

By Margaret Wild and Ron Wilds Edited by Chloe Ryu

Crunch, says the leaves when they pass under Magpie’s foot. It was almost  dark and Magpie was no where near home. She shivered when an icy blast of wind struck her. Oh how she missed Dog, than she remembered Fox’s haunted eyes. His coat flickering like a put out fire. The rage and envy in his eyes, Magpie shivered again. As night slowly took over, owls hooted and things scurried to and fro, always out of Magpies reach. Soon, Magpie found a cave where she immediately fell asleep. She awoke to the friendly chirping of nearby birds. Than she heard a gentle voice calling her name, it was coming closer and closer. Wait, thought Magpie. I recognize that voice. It sounds like . . . “ DOG”, she shrieked. Then a familiar figure burst through the cave and Dog spoke “ I’m here to take you home”. So, Magpie hopped on his back and they galloped all the way home.

THREE REASONS WHY YOU HAVE TO SKI

I know what my favorite activity is! it’s skiing! Everyone has a hobby or something they like to do. My favorite activity is to ski because when you ski you get to experience beautiful scenery, you get to spend lot’s of time with your family, and if you fall you won’t get hurt.

First, My favorite activity is to ski because you get to experience beautiful scenery. For example, one day in Colorado, we were going skiing. Everyone was running back and forth making arrangements.  It was making my head hurt. We were staying with some friends from church. Soon everyone was ready to go. I was so excited and when I stepped onto the powdery snow, a breathtaking view awaited us. In the bright light, blue sky you can eagles soaring, the snow was light and powdery, and in the distance huge majestic mountains. I knew that this is where I belong! As you can see, this is why my favorite activity is skiing.

Next, My favorite activity is to ski because you get to spend time with your family. For example, I love the feel of the cold air rushing in my ear and powdery snow smooth and light. So light it’s almost like I’m flying. That seems like the best part but it’s not. It’s being with your family. Only your family will experience this with you. This is why My favorite activity is skiing.

Finally, My favorite activity is to ski because if you fall you won’t get hurt. For example, I was going so fast I could barely hear my mom screaming,“ Chloe ….” I couldn’t hear the rest and then I fell. I stumbled because I was trying to avoid this guy. It was fun,the powdery snow tickling my face and protecting me. Afterwards, in the condo we were all laughing at me and I was laughing with them. Lastly, this is why My favorite activity is to ski.

In conclusion, my favorite activity is skiing because you get to experience beautiful scenery, you get to spend time with family, and if you fall hopefully you won’t get hurt. I think everyone should have a hobby. It doesn’t have to be skiing but at least something they like to do or what’s the point of living if you don’t have fun!

MY BROTHER

An anonymous person once said, “Of all the toys I have to play I’d chose my brother any day.” I know who my friend for life is, none other than my brother! I’m lucky to have a younger brother because he is fun to play with, he taught me how to play most sports, and because he always shares stuff with me.

To begin with, I’m lucky to have a younger brother because he is fun to play with. For example, one day in December my brother and I went outside to collect ingredients for a fake potion.

“Chloe can you collect acorns for us?” he asked through the walkie talkie.

”‘Sure,” I replied. Then I went on wandering, while scooping a handful of acorns. I looked into my bucket and I had pinesap, leaves, bark, poisonous berries, acorns and a stick. I wonder what Shane has, I thought as I looked around, thinking about what I should get. Soon Shane asked me on the walkie talkie to meet him in the basement. As soon as I heard that, I dashed into the house and went into the basement. Shane already had cups filled with water, then we added the ingredients the inside of the cup. It started turning brown and it started to smell like pine.

“That was awesome,” I told my brother and we both agreed we had to do something like that again. This proves that I’m lucky to have a younger brother because we have fun together.

Second of all, I’m lucky to have a younger brother because he teaches me how to play most sports. For instance, one day Shane asked me if I wanted to play football. He didn’t wait for me to answer because he was so excited. He kept on talking on and on about how you need to run like this and throw like this and on and on until we reached the front lawn. At first I was getting pushed and pulled and run over and tackled until I kind of got the hang of it. { But I still really didn’t get it }. But I still had fun tackling and running for a touchdown. After we were done,Shane asked me, “Did you have fun?”

“Yep, you bet I did,” I laughed. The rest of the day we threw the football , laughed , and had fun.

At the end of the day when I snuggled under the blankets I thought how lucky I am to have a younger brother I had so much fun, I wondered what the next day would bring us. Eventually I drifted off to sleep. As you can see I’m lucky to have a younger brother.

Lastly, I’m lucky to have a younger brother because he shares stuff with me. Finally, one day when I was in first grade and Shane was in Kindergarten\ Preschool, Shane came home with a dozen plastic eggs filled with jellybeans. I watched jealously as I saw him pop the jelly beans into his mouth, he caught me looking  and he asked  “ Would you like some? “ I nodded timidly. So he gave me most of the eggs and kept little for himself. I was very grateful. My brother is awesome, I thought to myself as I munched on a jellybean. That’s why I’m lucky to have a younger brother because he shares stuff with me.

In conclusion, I’m lucky  have a younger brother because he is fun to play with, he taught me to play most sports, and because he shares stuff with me. You’re probably thinking brothers are so annoying, yes they are, but they can also be you’re best friend because you get to experience many life events with them. I’m really grateful to have a younger brother and you should be to.
